Make Them Remember You

In honor of the beginning of the semester here, I would like to take a little time to talk about a crucial part of the first day of classes...First impressions are essential in our world today. Whether you are applying for a job, or meeting new people, you want to be memorable. Despite how corny I sound, I say, whole-heartedly, that confidence is indeed key. What better way to feel a bit better about yourself than having a great outfit? I know all you fashion lovers out there understand me when I say that the day is a little brighter and much more enjoyable when wearing that new shirt you purchased over the weekend, or maybe even rummaging through your mother's closet and donning a vintage look for the first time.

For my first day outfit, I picked out a two new items that I thrifted over my winter break. The sweater is Tyrolia By Head and the woolen shorts are from Old Navy. Tights by Worthington and Dr. Marten boots with Air Custom Soles. Notice how I balanced out the graphic print of the sweater by playing out dark colors on the bottom half of my outfit. I layered the knee high socks over my tights to both accomodate for the cold weather along with adding a little sexy lace pattern into the equation. I picked the boots so the chunky nature matched my slightly oversized sweater.

Don't know what to do for your first day? Experiment!! Don't be afraid to try something a little different. Through experimentation you will be able to define your own unique style that makes you feel pretty and confident. Pair a girly dress with ripped tights and a leather jacket to rock the "girly biker chic" look. Pair it with some kick- ass wedge boot heels to complete the look.

WTF: Sleep Walking Part II

BREAKING NEWS!
I never expected to blog about this ever again, but it seems that the officials of Shreveport in Louisiana are also against the whole "wearing pajamas in public" thing. Apparently the commissioner who proposed this did so on the basis that wearing pajamas is the gateway towards wearing underwear in public. However, I think it's because he read THIS blog and decided he wants his town to be as stylish as possible. WAIT! DOES THAT MEAN THEY WILL BAN THE SNUGGIE? NOT MY SNUGGIE! NOOOOO!!!

Just to reiterate, don't wear pajamas out in public. If you want to be comfortable, stay at home or something...

(Let's never talk about street pajamas...again),

Oprah Moment

Now that dear Oprah has departed from the media world, I have personally taken it upon myself to fill the gap. In honor of the big O, it's time for DENNIS' FAVORITE THINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. The Hunger Games
With the end of the beloved Harry Potter series, I have been forced to seek out a new book to unhealthily obsess over. While I find the writing simplistic and unrefined, the story is one that you literally consume as you stay up till the break of dawn trying to find out what happens next (true life). Style wise, I really like the windbreaker/jackets that are shown in the trailer (picture unavailable, look it up yourself). And the t-shirt shown above. PS: They are also coming out with their own fashion line, whaaaaaa?

2. Nautical Looking Stuff
Saint James Nautical t-shirt
Cause who doesn't want to look like they are going sailing all the time? Even in the middle of winter when the Charles River is frozen.

3. Classy ass shit like bowties
Ernest Alexander
Need to look fancy? Put on a bowtie and its BOOM, instant touch of class. However, unlike regular ties, these have to be used with caution. Save them for actual instances where you need them, like a fancy smancy gathering or a nerd themed party. Otherwise you will like someone who's trying too hard if you wear it with anything and everything.

4. Twitter
Its true...just kidding not really
How else am I going to tell the world all the important stuff I am doing like blogging? (shameless self promotion: @thedennisli)

5. Jell-O
Super Fancy Jell-O
Last but not least, style isn't just about what you wear, but also about what you do. The word style is also in lifeSTYLE. Forced to eat dining hall food, I have found refuge in the dessert table. And the king of all desserts is Jell-O, or gelatin if you don't want to be brand specific. And the best thing about Jell-O is that it can be extremely low end or super fancy.

Golden Masters and Complete Disasters

It's time to roll out the red carpet, because award season is here. The Golden Globes just recently happened and I have some mixed reviews about the fashion on that fine day. Let's start out with some of the best, in my opinion, of the night.

The flawless Emma Stone will be the first on my best dressed list. She has become a hit on the movie screens and the fashion scene this year. At the Globes she wore a stunning maroon and red Lanvin gown. The hot hues in her dress complimented the red shade of her hair. (EMMA STONE IS FUCKING PERFECTION! - Dennis)

Next, we have Rooney Mara wearing Nina Ricci. I usually prefer when stars wear colors on the red carpet, however Mara pulls off this unique black gown beautifully. Her career is blowing up with her role as the title character in her film, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The style she has been portraying since she was made-over for the film, is edgy and unique (Lisbeth Salander would approve). View her spread in Vogue.

Another one of my favorites of the night was Shailene Woodley, clad in a gown designed by Marchesa. My only problem with this lovely look is that I wish she wore some more jewelery, but other than that, I say she looks fantastic.

Sofia Vergara, one of the hilarious stars of the hit comedy "Modern Family", wore a custom designed gown from Vera Wang. She looks stunning as the dress perfectly molds to her body. A+ girl!

Tilda Swinton looks absolutely fabulous wearing Haider Ackermann. The pastel color of her dress compliments her platinum hair exquisitely. Also, the shape of the dress really accentuates her tall and slim body.

Now for Sheena's favorite, Salma Hayek, wearing Gucci. At first I was indifferent about this look, but it has grown on me. I love the mixture of black and gold and how the gown fits this bombshell like a glove.

And, for the moment you've all been waiting for, here are a few of the celebrities who missed the mark.

Let's start with an obvious choice. Lea Michele wore a Marchesa gown that was transparent on top except for some silver beading. I understand that she's trying to look mature, and sometime illusion gowns are beautiful, but what was she thinking? I mean really, she usually dresses so well. She just looks horrible.

Now for Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci. The shape of her gown is beautiful, as are the colors. However, there is just so much going on at once. There are sequins, scales, and feathers. It looks like an alligator, disco ball, and raven all collided and formed one gown. I really want to like it and I know that most people did, but it just doesn't work for me.

I hate to put the next person on the disaster list, but Michelle Williams wearing Jason Wu. Honey, what were you thinking? You're usually so stylish and gorgeous. Why did you wear this awful long-sleeved, blue, leopard-print dress? And that headband. Just no. (Though she does partially redeem herself with her new GQ photospread - Dennis)

Next we have the queen of pop, Madonna (Pictured with Andrea Riseborough), wearing Reem Acra. A disastrous combination of colors and ruffles. Oh the ruffles, way too much material, girl (haha).

I normally like simple long sleeved gowns, but the Naheen dress on Julianna Margulies was not flattering. It's not that I don't like the dress, I just think it looks so bad on her.

Glee stars were not successful with their red carpet style. Let's take a look at Dianna Agron in a red J. Mendel gown. All I can say is that it looks like her dress was in a fight with a cheese grater.

Hopefully these stars do better for the next red carpet event.

WTF: Sleep Walking

Trends that we hate:
We over here at "Yards of Style" hold immense respect for the great fashion houses of the world such as Salvatore Ferragamo, Louis Vuitton, and Tommy Hilfiger. They are talented designers who have helped mold the world's sense of style. However, they are not perfect and thus can make mistakes that make us go WTF. Today we will discuss the WTF Trend of the Moment: Street Pajamas!

1. Salvatore Ferragamo
Top, $1,280 at 655 Fifth Ave. Louis Vuitton pants, $1,440 at 1 E. 57th St.
While I am a sucker for any blue/white combination, is this seriously how y'all want to look while strutting around. No, this is not high end, it looks like you can't afford real clothes.

2. Tommy Hilfiger
Top, $248, and pants, $298, at 681 Fifth Ave.
The previous one at least looks somewhat classy but this mess right here is the Medusa of patterns. I just...just can't even look at this anymore...
Obviously this is the next high end fashion trend straight from the underground fashion scene in NYC...so being so in tuned with current trends here we are with our own "street pajamas." Get ready for us world!

Welcome!

Welcome to our fashion blog, "Yards of Style".

What we will post about:

  • Our creative ensembles, using photographs
  • Trends
  • Our critiques of collections and the styles of other people.
  • Basically anything that peaks our fancy.

Who are "we":

Jordan Ford aka Jordan "Poshinista" Ford. Born into a stylish family, she resides in THE center of the universe, NYC (JK she lives on Long Island). Shoe lover in every sense of the word, her closet is a magical place and she is constantly adding to her collection. Perhaps equaling her love of fashion is her love she holds for her puppy, Lucy.

Sheena Chatterjee aka Sheena "Grandma Sweater" Chatterjee. She is the epitome of a hipster, though she will never admit it (which is the most hipster thing a hipster can do). A collection of sweaters, and tons of thrifted items make up the majority of her closet. When shopping on a budget, Sheena will help you get the items you desire for a minimal price.  She also enjoys narwals, the unicorns of the sea.

Dennis Li aka Dennis "Fancy Pants" Li. He rocks bow ties, suspenders and cardigans. He seems like a normal, sweet guy but watch out, he is one sassy motherfucker, especially when he's wearing his sassy scarf. Since moving to Boston from the metropolis that is Chicago, he has tried to emulate the East Coast style. He enjoys long walks on the beach, sipping on champagne, horse races with fancy hats, and above all Jell-O served in ostentatious cups.

We will try to update frequently. Enjoy!
